Malaysia Describes Two Possible Flight Corridors

Malaysian officials announce on March 15, 2014, that analysis of satellite communications data indicates Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 may have traveled along one of two broad flight corridors after losing contact.

During a press briefing, authorities state that the aircraft’s continued satellite handshakes suggest it flies either northward through Central Asia or southward into the southern Indian Ocean. The announcement significantly expands the possible search area beyond the South China Sea.

Officials confirm that investigators are working with international partners to analyze radar data, satellite information, and aircraft performance models to determine which corridor is more likely. Authorities stress that the corridors represent broad regions rather than specific routes.

Malaysia Airlines contacts the families of passengers and crew to inform them of the development. Officials acknowledge the uncertainty involved and reiterate that no conclusions have been reached regarding the aircraft’s fate.
